The Difference Between Buyer Keywords and Research Keywords Explained. VERY IMPORTANT!
Hi! Daniel Brock here – and my apologies for not updating my blog sooner.
I have been working hard on a new membership site that I will be introducing pretty soon. I think you all will love this one.
At any rate, I wanted to talk about something VERY important to ALL online sellers. It doesn’t matter if you are an affiliate marketer, product creator, service provider(web hosts for example), you NEED to know this.
This is one of those things I wish I would have learned when I first started making money online, but couldn’t because it took months and months of trial and error before I understood it.
What I am going to do is teach you how to differentiate(big word!) a searcher with a buyer mindset between a searcher with a research mindset.
There is a HUGE difference between these types of keywords – both have their different ways of monetizing. But generally, a person using a buyer oriented keyword is much easier to convert than a buyer using a research keyword.
In fact, on one affiliate program I promote, the different is staggering(using the same method of monetizing).
- Buyer keywords are converting at 1:22
- Research oriented keywords are converting at 1:200.
That’s a difference of nearly 10 times the amount of sales.
As you can see, the difference can either make or break your campaign.
So, let’s get started!
Let’s pretend I am promoting a carpal tunnel program.
Generally with a topic, there are two types of research oriented keywords. Let me give you some examples of research oriented keywords for the carpal tunnel problem.
Research phase 1 – figuring out what type of problem they have.
- wrist pain
- pain in the wrist
- muscle pain in the wrist
- pain while typing
Now, obviously this person has a problem. However, based on the keywords, I can tell that they aren’t exactly sure what problem they have. For all they know, they have a broken wrist and not something as minor as carpal tunnel. This type of searcher is going to convert the lowest. As the searcher becomes more educated on the topic, they will graduate to the next step. And that is the determination step.
Research Phase 2: determining the exact problem
- how to cure carpal tunnel
- what is carpal tunnel
- carpal tunnel symptoms
In this step of the process, the searcher is determining the exact problem they have. In phase 1, a website might have suggested to them that they may have carpal tunnel. In phase 2, they are determining whether or not that is their exact ailment. This part of the process will convert, however you still have a bit of work a head of you(they need more education!).
OK so our searcher has graduated phase 2 by determining that they indeed have carpal tunnel. They are now ready to enter the buying phase.
Buying phase 1: Finding the solution
- carpal tunnel treatment
- best carpal tunnel remedy
- carpal tunnel cure
This type of keyword signifies that they are ready for something. They are ready to make the decision. When someone types in the word treatment for example, they are signifying that they are ready to get ‘something’. Whether it be information or an actual product, they are ready for the solution.
These types of keywords will convert pretty nicely, and I recommend you immediate try and target this level. You can cash in on this by suggesting to them solutions to their problem. You can recommend various affiliate products for them to check out. You will get a lot of impulse buyers targeting these specific keywords.
Buying phase 2: Comparing solutions
These keywords are for those meticulous buyers who like to research products before they buy them.
- Jim’s Carpal Tunnel Book
- Jim’s Carpal Tunnel Book Review
- Jim’s Carpal Tunnel Book vs. The Carpal Tunnel Ball
As you can see, they have determined they want a product, and just want to confirm with themselves that the purchase is worth the money. While there is less of these searches, These types of searchers will convert like crazy.
A simple product review page will convert these types of searches very nicely.
What works best
Obviously it makes sense to target your buyer keywords as soon as possible. These will make the most money for you. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t make money off research oriented keywords.
To make money off those types of searches, you have to graduate your reader. Take them through the process of determining their problem, giving them suggestions on solutions, and finally introducing your very best call to action which would be to purchase a certain product.
The best way to do this is to get them on a mailing list so that you can contact them over and over again. With each email you send them, you are trying to take them from point a to point b to point c(end result = affiliate commission).
Study this and practice identifying the different types of searches in your own niche. While it does take a little bit of practice, it’s going to be worth it for you in the long one.

P.S. Keep an eye out for my membership site I am releasing soon. This will be a game changer for a lot of you affiliates out there – I know because I teach all of the things that have significantly improved my results with my affiliate marketing campaigns. I teach things that work for me, as well as new experimental tactics that I find to work well.
Dantheinternetman, this is great post and I agree the key word search as buyer is the key to get traffic syphoned from search engine, use of synonym, common questions related to products and product research and analysis related things should be considered during key words selection process.
Very good information. There are other search engines besides Google, so you don’t want to limit yourself only to what Google does. Some good keywords combined with content of value is your best approach to getting traffic. Have a opt-in page – with autoresponder to build your list.
The more specific keywords people search, the more ready they are to buy.
You broke it down well, Dan. It’s simple yet not many marketers realize that they may have been targeting unprofitable keywords.
